Owen was born in 22 March 1960 in Tumut, New South Wales Australia, he is 10 minutes older than his twin brother Ian, when Owen and Ian were just 5 or 6 years old they would learn little songs from their mother singing around the house and sister who played a lot of 78 records, their parents encouraged Owen and Ian to sing their little ditty's for the manager and the overseer on the property Red Hill Station their father worked on Owen and Ian were paid 10 or 20 cents a song, Owen was singing at an early age in school concerts and often took the lead role.
I asked Owen when the first time he heard Yodelling was, "it was in Canberra in Civic Mall this happened Playing on the outside speakers, when I heard it I rolled around on the ground laughing my head off. Not because I didn't like it. I loved it. Been a Frank Ifield fan ever since. I was 16. I went into the music shop that was playing it and bought the She taught me how to yodel tape. Took it home and tried it but couldn't do it yet. The feedback from Mum was get out of the house and up the paddock. I was bad. I knew I was getting better when mum let me in the house again. Then it started to come with practise. Then I started to discover other singers I liked Like Slim Whitman, Slim Dusty, Buddy Williams, Tex Morton, Johnny Horton, Johnny Cash, Dusty Rankin, Wilf Carter, Bill Haley who did one country CD and he was a great yodeller. After learning quite a few songs I started singing around the rodeos and camp drafts for anyone who would hear me. I did all my early shows playing just a set of spoons because I couldn't play guitar. I did shows like this for four years until I joined the Tumut valley country music club. I still wasn't playing guitar then but I had to learn as the backing band had trouble playing the few original song. I went to Tamworth in 1983 to have a look. I rode upon a Honda 750 motorbike and stayed for only two days but that was enough to inspire me to work harder on guitar and write more songs. I didn't know that dad could sing until I was 19. I was walking in the bush and I heard someone singing and as I topped the rise there was dad with a mob of cattle sitting on a gray stallion singing his heart out. I thought if Dad can sing like that so can I. He helped me push myself harder and didn't even know it. . I yodelled full time until I was 39. That's when I got the nodules on the vocal chords"
Owen loves to sing and has always tried to promote his music through his live shows which more often than not, keeps him away from home a lot of the time. He is a survivor, music is his life, to succeed you need honest management, or do it yourself. Owen has embarked on a solo one man quest to take his music to encompass not only Australia but the rest of the world via the Internet and double his touring schedule.
With mentors such as Slim Dusty, Reg Poole, Terry Gordon, Michael Crawford, Chris and Angie Pritchard, all of these artists have shaped and taught Owen everything he knows about entertaining. He has appeared on the Ray Martin Show, Sixty Minutes, That's Country Today Country Crossroads on aurora channel 183 and various other TV shows over the last 15 years. With an easy going personality, Owen has always been approachable by his ever increasing fans is what keeps him going.
Owen has developed into an all round entertainer. Featured in his show are impersonations of many well known artists. The most popular of these being Frank J Spencer: Described by many as the funniest and most energetic comedy act to come along in years.
Singer, Songwriter, Comedian, Yodeller, Award Winner. Who could ask for more? Owen Blundell is quick witted, unpredictable, and energetic. If you have never seen Owen, you are missing out on a truly talented entertainer. And a show that will leave you wanting more every time
